Building Capacity

YOU ARE IN: Home > About us > Building Capacity

One of the most rewarding aspects of being part of Wimmera UnitingCare is sharing the joy as individuals, families and communities realise their abilities or experience something they thought impossible. We not only promote capacity building through our work but we are finding that our staff are enthusiastically adopting community capacity building activities in their own time.

It was little more than 10 years ago that we established Awakenings, Australia's only regional disability arts festival. Then a three hour show, today Awakenings is a diverse 10 day festival attracting national and international participants of all abilities and an ever expanding audience.

Working with an initiative of The Royal Children's Hospital Integrated Mental Health Program, we assist the Festival for Healthy Living each year, using drama and performing arts as a tool to promote a whole school approach to mental health and well being.

Students, teachers, parents and, increasingly, communities explore - in a spirit of problem solving, optimism and fun - everyday issues that affect our mental health.

While supporting others to achieve, Wimmera UnitingCare is also building its own capacity to provide that support. Underpinning the work we do in the community is our commitment to maintain and develop our capital assets, to plan and manage the way we do business, to improve and extend our information management and to encourage and train our staff and volunteers, providing them with appropriate and sustainable resources.
